This episode of Stepping Up turns our attention to sexual harassment, bullying and family and domestic violence. These are challenging topics, but ones we must engage with in meaningful, sensitive and robust ways.

#Metoo and more recent developments have led to a renewed focus on harassment in the workplace (and elsewhere). Architecture is not immune, as Suzie Hunt so clearly laid out in her 2018 letter to the profession. Nonetheless, harassment remains under-discussed and under-reported. Our industry is small and tightly connected, and there is plenty of evidence that all-too-often the burden and cost is borne by those who make a complaint, not by the perpetrator. Too many people still look the other way. Others simply don’t know what to do or where to turn when something happens. Some people move on, hoping that things will be different in a new practice, while others leave the profession altogether. Practices may understand their legal obligations, yet still stumble badly when faced with a complaint.

So, what do we do – as individuals, as colleagues, as employers and leaders, as practices and as a profession? How do we create cultures in which harassment and bullying cannot gain a foothold? What should a practice do when they find out it is happening? How can we create policies and processes that promote safety and hold perpetrators to account. And what of those experiencing violence in the home? How can practices support employees facing family and domestic violence?

There are lots of questions, and collectively we must not look away. In addition to watching this important discussion – we also recommend reading the wide range of content already published on Parlour. This includes opinion pieces, research reports and concrete information about practical support available.
