Social justice, professional confidence and always challenging yourself – listen in as Yvette Breytenbach and Emily Taylor get to know each other at the first Hobart Salon back in 2017.

Our conversationalists for this episode are Tasmanian architects Emily Taylor (Core Collective) and Yvette Breytenbach (Morrison & Breytenbach Architects). At the time of recording in 2017, Yvette was also the President of the Tasmanian Chapter of the Australian Institute of Architects.

Our speakers had only met once before this conversation – in preparation for it – and a new friendship was forged as they told stories of their lives in architecture in front of an audience of peers and colleagues. The conversation includes Yvette describing her childhood and education in South Africa, and the commitment to social justice that this imbued, and Emily speaking of the importance of pushing outside areas of comfort.

This Session was recorded live at the Hobart Autumn Salon on Muwinina Country at the Brickworks Design Studio on Thursday 27 April, 2017. Supported by Parlour Partner AWS, this was the first Salon in what has become a long-term collaboration with The Findlay Project. Photographs: Nina Hamilton.
