Indigenising the Built Environment
Michael Mossman joins us to share information about the large research project Indigenising the Built Environment, and how the Parlour community can contribute to this important work. Funded by Australian Research Council Discovery Indigenous program, the research project commenced in 2024 and concludes in 2026.
Michael provides a brief overview of research and online survey. He explains that there is a lot of information to unpack and reflect upon. The research team is exploring the efficacy of the First Nations focused Performance Criteria within the National Standard of Competency for Architects, the broad trends, the current practices and understandings of the competencies, and the broader issues arising from this shared knowledge.
Michael talks us through the Indigenous research methodology – the importance of taking time, listening, learning and building relationships. Future yarning workshops will offer opportunities to bring together a wide range of people to flesh out these ideas.
He then yarns with Sarah about the project aims, ambitions and approach. This includes privileging Indigenous research methodologies and facilitating and promoting cultural safety and inclusiveness throughout the project.
We encourage everyone to take the survey and contribute to this significant project.

This session was recorded live on 7 March 2025. The Deadly Djurumin Yarns are a collaboration between Parlour and Deadly Djurumin.
