Following on from the insightful discussion with Thihoa Gill and Sarah Bennett, our second Light at the End of the Tunnel session for 2021 extends our collective reflections on have we learned over the last 18 months, what advice we might offer each other, and how practice is adapting and changing.

In this session, established consultant Sue Wittenoom and young practitioner Ilana Razbash shared their insights about navigating work and career during the pandemic. Sue describes the cultures and strategies of exemplar companies, who are “poster children for systems online that help teams collaborate and work”. Learning by osmosis is replaced by explicit systems and codified knowledge sharing. As Ilana emphasises, collaborating with distributed teams can be highly successful when there is “the right intention”.

The opportunities for positive change were not lost on our speakers, who spoke about “not wasting a good crisis” and taking the leap if you’re not happy in your job. Emerging themes were the current buoyant job market, the opportunity for registration and upskilling, the importance of good mentoring and leaders who care, the liberation of going out on your own, and how “joyful” it can be to pause and contemplate the definition of meaningful work.

Full of positivity, energy and optimism, this session is well worth a look.

The 2021 Light at the End of the Tunnel sessions are presented in collaboration with the Melbourne School pf Design, University of Melbourne. This session was recorded on Friday 27 August, 2021.
