What happens when your architectural career takes an unexpected turn – or when you choose to chart a new course altogether? In this new Parlour series, we explore the rich and varied paths of those who have pivoted away from traditional architectural practice to apply their skills in allied fields and beyond.

Career pivots

Architecture teaches us far more than how to detail a plan or meet a brief. It equips us with a suite of transferable skills – problem solving, communication, collaboration, strategic thinking, innovation and creativity. These skills are extremely valuable across the built environment and in many other industries – perfect for career pivots.

Through first-person reflections, this series sheds light on the diverse possibilities open to architectural professionals. Whether driven by necessity, curiosity or conviction, each story offers insight into how an architectural mindset can create meaningful impact in many different contexts – and helps broaden our collective understanding of what an architectural career can be.

Remember, a career pivot isn’t a step sideways – it’s a step forward in a new direction.

All contributions are welcome. Simply send in your reflection on your career pivots with contact details to hello@parlour.org.au.

Questions you may address when writing your reflection may include some or all of the following:

  • What do you do now, and what do you enjoy most about it?
  • How did you get here? Was there a key turning point or decision that shaped your current path?
  • How do you use your architectural skills, knowledge and experience in the new role? Which are most valuable?
  • Were there any unexpected challenges in making the transition?
  • How did you find or create opportunities beyond traditional practice?
  • What advice would you give to others considering a similar pivot?
  • Has working beyond traditional practice provided new perspectives on architecture? Do you have thoughts about how the profession can adapt and evolve?
