Parlour and KTA began 2024 with an invigorating conversation with THREE gold medallists – Maggie Edmond, Kerstin Thompson and Carol Ross Barney. Now, you can watch this spirited, convivial conversation about recognition, practice and the direction of the profession.
Hailing from Chicago, Carol Ross Barney is the recipient of the 2023 American Institute of Architects Gold Medal. She is recognised for her bold body of work, her dedication to the design of public spaces that improve everyday lives and her determined advocacy – “excellent design is a right, not a privilege”. We are delighted to welcome Carol on her brief (and first) visit to Australia.
Maggie Edmond is the recipient of the 2003 Australian Institute of Architects Gold Medal, awarded retrospectively in 2023, and Kerstin Thompson is the 2023 Australian Institute of Architects Gold Medallist.
My quick advice is, we come out of university and we enter a world which is a beautiful world, and it has a wall around it. It’s the world of architecture. My advice is to break out of that world, break out of that bubble, spread yourself out …
Because it’s in that spreading out that you can build up a client base. You can build up a better understanding of the people who will be your clients and your users in the future. And even if it’s done in a small way, it can reap dividends to your practice in architecture.
Maggie Edmond
This event was recorded live on 8 February 2024 at the KTA studio in North Melbourne. The conversation was chaired by Justine Clark and filmed by Shing Hei Ho.
