Georgia Lindsay Tara Broun

Join Georgia Lindsay and Tara Broun for a lively conversation about early ambitions and peripatetic lives in academia and practice, from the 2022 Launceston Winter Salon.

Our conversationalists for this episode are Georgia Lindsay and Tara Broun. Georgia, originally from the United States, is a senior lecturer in architecture at the University of Tasmania. At the time of the recording Tara was an architect at John Wardle Architects. She is now at Cumulus.

Georgia and Tara discuss early ambitions, their serendipitous discovery of architecture, and significant life moves. Tara spent time in Europe and Melbourne before returning to Tasmania – “literally a breath of fresh air”. Georgia was fascinated by why art matters and its impact on people before settling on architecture as a field of study for her PhD. She moved around the US before landing her current job at the University of Tasmania. Georgia and Tara compare Australia and the US, touching on health care costs, parental leave, holidays and other workplace rights. They discuss the challenges of balancing an architecture career and children, with many women having to choose between registration and having children, putting one or the other on hold. They share their own experiences with life balance and the inequity they still observe in the profession, particularly at the senior levels. Tara says, ”We need time to turn the ship around, but the ship doesn’t have a very good turning circle”.
