Navigating fatigue
Fatigue. What does this look like for multicultural practitioners balancing their own cultural practices within homogeneous environments? How is this navigated and how can others help lighten the load? This extraordinary, heartfelt and generous conversation is essential watching for us all.
Watch the Navigating fatigue trailer – Sonia Sarangi on voting with your feet and finding a place in the profession.
This session of On the Verandah provides insight into the additional, often unconscious, labour that is inherent in the work of multicultural practitioners. Sonia Sarangi, Thihoa Gill and Saba Adil Malik share experiences and expertise of navigating fatigue with convenors Saneia Norton and Lameesa Yousuf. Their determination and humour, eloquence and fury helps us all navigate this complex, challenging and important topic.
The conversation explores the labour that is part and parcel of being a practitioner juggling intersectional practice and dissects the compounding effects of this often-invisible work. It outlines the fatigue of having to forge opportunities for ourselves (and others) out of necessity and having the agency to advocate for rest and reprieve when necessary.
Our speakers share shocking experiences and talk about the practical solutions they have found to help to manage fatigue. They offer ideas for what colleagues and employers can do to help lighten the load.
