Be direct. Minimise jargon. Keep things simple. Value your time and expertise. Don’t downplay your contribution. Be a ‘visible expert’.

This session is packed with useful advice on how to communicate with clarity and confidence – with clients, with the community and with colleagues.

Lindy Johnson and Nikita Morell bring their years of experience training and supporting architects and built environment professionals in all things communication. They take us through some of the common mistakes they see on a daily basis, from passive language and burying the message to too little communication in general. “A lack of communication creates a lack of trust”

When it comes to marketing, Lindy advises that it’s important to talk about the good, but don’t forget the bad and the ugly. Clients should see the story of transformation and behind-the-scenes work in exemplar projects rather than simply glossy pictures of completed beautiful buildings. The value of the design process needs to be front and centre.

So, how do you reach clients and build rapport and trust when you can’t meet face to face? Is it enough to simply say, ‘my work speaks for itself’? How do you own your expertise and express your confidence without being branded “a ballbreaker”? Watch the full session for answers to these questions and more.

The 2021 Light at the End of the Tunnel series is presented in collaboration with the Melbourne School of Design, University of Melbourne. This session was recorded on Friday 8 October 2021.
