Recollections from the Field – Shaneen Fantin
7 May 2025
12—1.30pm
Join Parlour and Brickworks for a very special lunchtime event with Shaneen Fantin as she recalls and reflects on three decades of experiences working in remote Australia and with First Nations communities and peoples.

Shaneen Fantin is a great friend to Parlour, and we are thrilled she is joining us to share her insights and experiences ‘from the field’ during a visit to Melbourne. This is a wonderful opportunity to hear from a considered, thoughtful and deeply experienced practitioner – with a great sense of humour and humility.
Shaneen will read two short works of creative non-fiction, followed by an informal conversation.
The stories are part of a larger set, based in Shaneen’s experiences between 2000 and 2010. Together, they highlight the gaps in the understanding of non-Indigenous people working in remote areas with First Nations peoples and communities. These gaps point to the fundamental cultural and structural differences that permeate this work and can perpetuate institutional racism, colonial load, white privilege, gender inequality and poverty.
Shaneen will also share the joy that weaves through the everyday of remote work and work with First Nations peoples. The things that keep bringing her back are very simple and often go hand-in-hand with the complex and the uncomfortable.
Book now! This is an event not to be missed.
