Stepping Up on Multicultural Leadership

Join Parlour, the ACA and the Champions of Change Architecture group for an enlivening hopeful conversation that does not shy away from the very real challenges experienced by too many people.

Book now for this important session with Zamaneh Khoshdel of AECOM and MAPP, Ann Lau of Hayball and Mirjana Lozanovska of Deakin University, in conversation with Angelina Pillai and Maryam Gusheh.

Australian architecture is a diverse, multicultural community. Students, practitioners and allied professionals come from a wide range of cultural backgrounds, and bring many and varied experiences with them. This diversity is captured in the Census data, but it is much less visible when we look at the senior levels of the profession – and at who benefits from the systems of recognition and reward.

At the same time, we hear that many people experience challenges in finding professional outlets for their experience and education, energy, commitments and ambition – or even a foot in the door. Once in, these barriers extend to the opportunities offered – from career defining projects to day-to-day communication. These barriers are experienced disproportionately by people who do not look or sound like the dominant demographic of leaders.

Multicultural practitioners bring a wealth of knowledge, experience and expertise, which is of great benefit to practices, the profession and the community. What are practices doing to foster new generations of multicultural leaders? What impediments are people experiencing as they seek to build careers? What is needed and how can we all do better?
