This case study of the Synapse Community Living Initiative in Cairns explores the design and development of a culturally responsive accommodation facility for Indigenous and non-Indigenous people with brain injuries.
The Yarn looks at what ‘non-institutional’ design means in a health context. It brings together the client and design team to discuss the design process that created the facility and program that gives room for rehabilitation, and supports learning of independent living skills considerate of Indigenous behavioural and cultural values.
Francoise Lane, herself a member of the design team, facilitates this Deadly Djurumin Yarn with Synapse’s CEO Dr Jennifer Cullen, Synapse Community Living Initiative Manager Janine Taylor and the collaborative design team – People Oriented Design’s Dr Shaneen Fantin, Indij Design’s Andrew Lane and Abriculture’s Gudju Gudju Fourmile.
