Monica Edwards on the devastating statistics.
On Family & Domestic Violence
The statistics say it all:
- 1 in 6 women and 1 in 16 men have experienced physical or sexual violence by a current or previous partner since age 15.
- 1 in 4 women and 1 in 6 men have experienced emotional abuse by a current or previous partner since the age of 15.
- 1 woman is killed every 9 days and 1 man is killed every 29 days by a partner
As you read this, there are 800,000 women in the Australian workforce affected by domestic and family violence. Their time at work is often the only day-time refuge.
From a business point of view, productivity is impacted, with employees experiencing violence more likely to take unplanned days off or work irregular, inconsistent hours. Employees may also be less effective, distracted, anxious, in pain or exhausted. This inconsistency, alongside social and emotional challenges, may lead to high staff turnovers. Domestic and family violence can also become a workplace health and safety issue, especially if a perpetrator harasses or stalks a person in the office. But this is not merely a business, productivity or risk issue. We also have a moral and ethical obligation to engage with this confronting, challenging and lethal problem.
Domestic and family violence is a devastating societal issue. The workplace is perfectly positioned to affect change. Collectively we can shift the stigma of silence that perpetuates these behaviours, to a culture of informed awareness and the preparedness to act. Watch to learn how workplaces can really make a difference.
