Join us for the first Parlour LAB of 2025, a fascinating discussion about research into collaborations between architects and communities in the creation of Australian mosques – with Katharine Bartsch and Maryam Gusheh.

LAB 34 invites us to consider creative collaboration and cross-cultural engagement through the findings of a fascinating research project, The Australian Mosque Today: Architectural Collaborations. This project analysed ten mosques, from design consultation through to construction, completed since 2000. Focusing on the nuances of the design process, the research reveals significant, complex narratives of engagement, collaboration and impact.

Come along to find out about some of the case studies, learn about the the core findings and explore what they mean for architects and design professionals collaborating across cultures.

Katharine Bartsch is Associate Professor in architecture at the University of Adelaide. Her research examines how human mobility shapes the built environment, specifically Islamic architecture. Her interdisciplinary approach enables a critical understanding of the production and transformation of the predominantly hybrid architecture of Muslim communities, with increasing emphasis on the Australian context.

Maryam Gusheh is Associate Professor in architecture at Monash University, and a Director of Parlour. Her work examines the relationship between architectural practice and the social and political contexts in which the built fabric is designed, constructed and received. Her interests include culture and identity in architecture, cross-cultural practices and inclusive architecture.
