“To change the design profession, we need to change what and how we teach; we need to present new models of success, and we need to change expectations!”

Women, Architecture and Academia Poster

A one-day symposium, convened by Peggy Deamer and Joanna Merwood-Salisbury, will be held in Wellington on October 8. It aims to develop and share strategies for empowering women academics and students. Participants from schools of architecture and design throughout Australasia are invited to present short, sharp observations in response to three themes – representation, gender and family, and curriculum.

Hosted by Victoria University of Wellington, this is the second in a series of international events addressing feminism in architectural academia. (The first was held at the School of Constructed Environments, Parsons The New School for Design, in New York in the US spring of 2015.)

The day will be organised through three sessions, each comprising a series of short presentations and a summarising workshop.

Program

Session 1: Representation, 10.00 am – 12.00 pm

Session 2: Gender and family, 1.00 pm – 3.00 pm

Session 3: Curriculum,  3:30 pm – 5:30 pm

Summation: 5:30 pm – 6:00 pm

Submissions

To ensure that as many voices are heard as possible, the organisers invite participants to submit a pecha-kucha-style presentation in response to one of the three topics.

Each person will be given seven minutes to make their point: 10 slides at 40 seconds each. A slide can show an image or text, as long as it does not exceed the time limit, which will be strictly enforced.

Presentations should be in PDF format. If there are more presentations than time available, they will be selected according to diversity of experience.
