Work in progress

The third session of On the Verandah explores the life-long process of developing skills and knowledge, building competency and the many and varied ways of charting a career – from the perspectives of immigrant practitioners.

What inequities and barriers are experienced by immigrants and culturally diverse women seeking careers in architecture and the built environment professions? What opportunities can be found, and where? How can colleagues, practices and professional bodies help? What are the pathways to registration and does registration matter? What is the role of education? What kinds of activities can help immigrants land their first professional role in a new country? What are the possibilities beyond and alongside traditional practice roles?

Our three panellists share their experiences of moving to Australia, the challenges and barriers, and the opportunities they’ve found here. They offer amazing advice about how to find your first job in the industry, how to stand out where opportunity is limited, how to frame your skills and experience in a way that employers will understand, the value of retail and hospitality jobs (people skills are everything!), and the power of advocating for yourself. Everyone will take away useful tips on active listening, finding common ground and points of connection, and always playing the long game.

This session was recorded live on 21 February 2025. On the Verandah is convened by Debjani Sarkar and Lameesa Yousuf.
