How do we better support carers within the workplace – to the benefit of individuals and the company as a whole? The last decade has seen an increase in the workplace support offered to parents and carers in Australia (albeit starting from a fairly low base). However, this tends to focus strongly on leave associated with the birth of a child, is predominantly accessed by women, and is still meagre compared to the support offered in some other countries. We know that caring responsibilities extend over much longer time periods and are not restricted to babies and young children – many people care for ageing parents or for family and friends facing all manner of challenges.
The Champions of Change Architecture Group has undertaken a set of interviews to better understand people’s experiences before, during and after taking parental or carers leave. The aim is to identify ways to better support all carers over the longer term, to overcome career stagnation for women with caring responsibilities, and to improve the uptake of flexible work and caring responsibilities by men. This includes understanding the cultural aspects of parental leave, carers leave and flexibility within the workplace and how these integrate with policies and processes.

Jana Perković has been documenting her own experiences as a new parent and researching the social design of birth and ecosystems of care in different places – the result is trenchant social critique and an extraordinary account of the intimacy of care. This has led to Designing Fertility, an event exploring pregnancy, fertility and procreation in a changing world.
We look forward to a fascinating and insightful conversation – see you there!
