Elizabeth Watson Brown
Federal MP elect for RyanGreens
Elizabeth Watson Brown is a Federal Member of Parliament, representing the electorate of Ryan in Queensland.
Her political career started with with volunteering on a number of Greens campaigns, where she recognised that “the Ryan community has deep resources and knowledge with the potential to contribute to the advancement of Australia as a just and habitable nation and a responsible international actor.” She ran for and won the seat of Ryan in the 2022 Federal election.
Elizabeth’s attitudes have been shaped by environmental and social concern and her lived experiences, from university in the 70s, to practice as a working mother in a male-dominated industry.
She has long-term, highly regarded expertise in the delivery of high quality residential, institutional, educational and community architecture, and a deep understanding of the role of architecture and urban design in the relationship between human amenity, landscape and climate in our subtropical and tropical urban realms.
Elizabeth's architectural career includes extensive experiences in large and small practice and important advisory roles. She was director of Elizabeth Watson Brown Architects for 21 years, a practice highly regarded for exemplary place responsive and socially responsible design. Elizabeth then joined Architectus as Design Director.
Her architectural work has been published widely and has received many significant architectural awards. Her work was exhibited in the seminal ‘Place Makers’ exhibition at the Gallery of Modern Art and at the Venice Biennale.
Elizabeth is an active participant in architectural and urban design discourse in many roles, including as a member of the Queensland Board for Urban Places and as Adjunct Professor of Architecture at the University of Queensland. Elizabeth is a Life Fellow of the Australian Institute of Architects and has been Queensland State Awards Director and National Awards Juror, as well as jury chair of the Gold Coast Urban Design Awards.
