Katharine Bartsch
Discipline Lead, Architecture and Landscape Architecture. Affiliate RAIAUniversity of Adelaide
As Discipline Lead of Architecture and Landscape Architecture at the University of Adelaide, Katharine is a highly experienced, award-winning educator. She is passionate about maximising students' critical and creative learning experiences and constantly inspired by the fresh international perspectives they bring to the discipline.
Katharine’s research examines how human mobility - through migration, pilgrimage, displacement or otherwise - shapes the built environment with increasing emphasis on multicultural Australia. Her research, funded by the Australian Research Council and DFAT, fuels her commitment to supervision and - with >10 PhD completions - Katharine is proud to see her post-graduate students thrive in academia from Aberdeen to Dhaka.
Curiously, Katharine has an exceptional ability to recall her students’ initial design experiments, arcane essay topics or comical studio incidents (camels in Oman spring to mind). Acknowledging diverse educational journeys, she welcomes graduates’ registration as architects and landscape architects.
Given this experience, Katharine’s children enjoy the indirect benefits of architectural education which is often materialised in spectacular dioramas for multifarious school projects.
