Rechelle Brookes
Urban Designer/Social PlannerRatio Consultants
I combine my education in a Bachelor of Arts (anthropology and sociology majors) with my Master of Urban Planning to create people-focussed places that centre the lived experience and prioritise communities.
My interests in the intersection of people and place have led to work that explores the ‘untold’ stories that exist within place. Often these are the stories of marginalised peoples, de-legitimised ‘informal’ practices, and in settler colonial settings, Indigenous sovereignty.
Motivated by social impact, I believe that the best outcomes emerge thorough community consultation and co-design. Planning is where ideologies about our world become lived realities.
My recent projects involve master planning for regional communities, pedestrianisation of streetscapes, and the activation of disused public places.
My favourite projects reflect my strengths in community participation and complex problem solving, and emerge through collaborative practice within a multi-disciplinary group.
I want to undertake work that contributes to just futures, whether that be through research, advocacy, or community-involved design. I would like to utilise my knowledge of ethnographic research to incorporate storytelling into planning processes.
