Penelope Forlano
DirectorForlano Design
Dr. Penelope Forlano’s practice, Forlano Design, is driven by a desire to evoke custodianship through public art and design. Her Ph.D. (architecture) examined the relationships of emotionally enduring public and private artifacts through a design anthropology approach and reflection on identity, place, and history. From furniture that evokes kinship memories to public art that acts as ‘community heirlooms’ reconnecting people to the past whilst looking forward to the future. She works with communities, Indigeneous artists and Elders to elevate forgotten or suppressed voices, history, or environmental concerns. Her works aim to evoke a person-object relationship of care, be it for the natural or man-made. She also collaborates and mentors emerging artists to create works in the built environment.
