Charmaine Kai

Charmaine is the Co-Founder and Director of 8i Architects, which specialises in designing government, education, healthcare and specialty technical projects throughout Australia.
For more than 20 years, Charmaine has led the design and delivery of IVF and healthcare facilities, and commercial, retail and community projects.
She is an examiner with the Board of Architects Queensland, a volunteer Treasurer/Education Committee Member of the Association of Consulting Architects Qld/NT branch, an Expert Reference Group Member for the review of the National Standards of Competency for Architects, Jury member for the Australian Good Design Awards, standing panel member for the AACA Accreditationand is a regular guest critic to universities and has tutored tutored architectural design, architectural history, interior design and Thesis supervision at UQ and QUT.
Charmaine was awarded a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Architects in recognition of her significant contribution to the architecture profession beyond architecture practice. She was recognised as one of the Top 100 Women in Construction in 2023.
She’s passionate about promoting quality architectural education for students and graduates, research into this area and its relevance to architectural practice. She has a special interest in Environmentally Sustainable Design and was a published researcher at Queensland University of Technology’s Centre for Subtropical Design.
