Liz Walsh is an award-winning, registered, emerging architect based in Hobart. Liz graduated from the UTas School of Architecture and Design with a Masters in Architecture and first class honours in 2011. At the completion of her studies Liz was awarded the Australian Institute of Architects Tasmanian Chapter Graduate Prize.

In 2012 Liz began a graduate position at 1+2 Architecture and later moved to Cumulus Studio. In 2015 Liz became an Associate at Cumulus Studio. In this role Liz worked to establish Design Research as a fundamental project stage, endeavouring to build a studio design culture committed to critique and a trans-disciplinary approach; to challenge project briefs, test sites and explore typologies within different project sectors. As a project architect at Cumulus Studio, Liz has creatively contributed to a breadth of complex private and public projects including: Pumphouse Point Hotel, Devils Corner Winery & Lookout, Lady Gowrie Integrated Centre for Children and Families and most recently the Cradle Mt Master Plan and associated Visitors Centre.

In 2012 Liz, and her partner Alex Nielsen, purchased and set about converting a circa 1820’s Stable in the centre of Hobart’s CBD. In 2015 #theBarnTAS was awarded the Nicholas Murcutt Award for Small Project Architecture as well as an award for Heritage Architecture at the AIA National Awards. More recently #theBarnTAS was awarded the Henry Hunter Triennial Award for Heritage Architecture at the Institute Tasmania Chapter Awards.

In 2016, Liz and Alex took a six month sabbatical from practice to travel to New York, Iceland and Newfoundland. During this time Liz began to investigate the ‘agency of islandness.’ More specifically exploring how islands, as testing grounds for social entrepreneurial investment and practices of deep community engagement, can engender and craft new and “specific’ models of cultural, environmental and economic resilience.

In 2017 Liz joined the UTas Masters of Architecture sessional staff team, tutoring in Professional Project 01 & 02, the final units of the Masters Program.

In her spare time Liz is the Co-Strategic Chair of the NAWIC Tasmanian Chapter Council and the Co-Creative Director of the 2018 Institute Tasmanian Chapter Architecture Awards. In both roles Liz endeavours to create and facilitate opportunities for local engagement with architecture and design as well as the construction industry more broadly.
