Sally Hsu

Associate Director
Bates Smart

Sally is an Associate Director at Bates Smart with local and international experience across a breadth of project sectors, scales and complexities. Sally has led design teams for major city-shaping developments, including various Design Excellence Competition-winning projects within the City of Sydney.

Most recently, Sally was the Project Lead for Bates Smart’s winning design at 175 Liverpool Street in Sydney. The mixed-use tower overlooks Hyde Park and the ANZAC War Memorial and combines 289 residential apartments with retail and commercial space, and a new community pocket park at the rear. The architecture reconciles its distinct and contrasting urban conditions – the symmetry and order of Hyde Park, with its Art Deco War Memorial and the gritty urbanism of Surry Hills’ warehouses and laneways.

Beyond the studio, Sally sees great importance in supporting the profession and giving back to the community. She is an Implementation Leader for the Architects Male Champions of Change and a member of NAWIC, PCA and WIDAC. Within these groups, Sally advocates for gender equality and cultural diversity and is an active mentor supporting women in the industry to rise to leadership roles. Sally is a NSW Architects Registration Board Part 03 Assessor, a committee member of the AIA Emerging Architects and Graduate Network (EmAGN), and a sessional academic at major Sydney universities.
