April McCabe

Partner + Director
The Planning Studio

I am an experienced urban planner, engagement and policy specialist with over 20 years working for government, and the private sector in Australia, the UK and Ireland.

I am the current chair of the PIA NSW Women in Planning Network and founder of Urbanistas Sydney, a women-led network creating a space to connect and amplify the voice of women through the sharing of stories, ideas and experiences to create more inclusive, generous and interesting cities.

I am passionate about local activism, gender equality and the advancement of women in the built environment. A driving motivation was that despite an abundance of amazing women, we are still largely underrepresented; as leaders, as voices and as role models in our cities. I am a strong advocate for creating human-centric cities, where the built environment positively influences how we experience and connect within places and it is the life between buildings and in public spaces that is the foundation to city making.

I am a Partner + Director at The Planning Studio specialising in landuse, social and cultural strategies, planning for social infrastructure, libraries and open spaces, preparation of SIAs and providing strategic policy advice.I also spent 4.5 years as a Policy Advisor to the Lord Mayor of Sydney, leading a team responsible for a varied portfolio that spanned the City of Sydney’s policy and operational areas, and advising on a diverse individual policy portfolio.
