Sofia Colabella

Lecturer
The University of Melbourne

Sofia is an architect and Lecturer in Architectural Technology at the Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning (ABP) of The University of Melbourne. As a registered architect (2002) with a PhD in Architectural Technology (2006), she co-founded and co-directed (2002-15) two research-based architecture practices specialising in structural, acoustic and interior design. Expert in timber lightweight structures and ecological digital design, she designed and built several timber gridshells and acoustic shells for open-air concerts (2007-15).

Her research explores the intersection of social equity, ecological sustainability, and the contemporary reinterpretation of traditional technologies, spanning four interconnected themes: 1) inclusive and future-ready design practice; 2) upcycling waste in architecture; 3) circular design; 4) innovative teaching approaches, all grounded in a broader commitment to advancing gender equity in construction.
Since 2016, she has been developing a cross-industry research project on upcycling waste in architecture through experimental prototyping.
