During a month-long residency these artists and architects will create site-specific works in the heritage-listed building 136–138 Cumberland Street, The Rocks. This building is a unique three-storey Late Victorian Italianate style building of historical and social significance. The works created during the residency will explore in detail the various historical and social layers to this building and urban surrounds. Projects include: Collaborative library of DIY architecture, Camera Obscura reflecting views of the city into the building, Interactive and Audio-sonic installation recorded on walks around The Rocks, Backyard Laundry reflecting upon sanitation issues of the area, Film Installation exploring the history of the site as a butchers, haberdashery and residence for Maori whalers, Installation of heritage colours used in the local area and the Re-construction of a Lost Street that was replaced by the adjacent Harbour Bridge.
The above works were chosen by an esteemed advisory board including Professor Ross Gibson, Associate Professor Anne Ferran and Dr Lee Stickells.
The Rocks Pop-up is an initiative of Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority to find creative uses for temporarily vacant buildings, attracting new visitors to Sydney’s historic heart. The 2013 Sydney Architecture Festival celebrates Your City/Your Community through the built environment, encouraging the public to engage with their surroundings on a more intimate level.
